Come September, I'm movin' off the hill to live downstairs from OPN-land. Hooray!

Now I have to tell my current roommate. I'm not looking forward to that. I hope she doesn't take it too personally.

she's a sweet person, and i think the pair of them have been pretty good to one another as roommates.

As for 1, I believe you, but as for 2, I don't think she's been a very good roommate to Hannah, at least that's the impression I get from her journal. She may not be a "bad" roommate in general, but there was definitely at least a big compatibility problem.

And I wasn't advocating cruelty, just suggesting that telling R. politely and with a great deal of advance notice is all Hannah owes to her, and that she shouldn't get hung up on R's reaction.

I care because of roommate karma. She's a good person. I don't want to add another difficulty to her life. But the sooner I tell her the less difficult it'll be, it seems.

I can understand your regretting that you are necessitating a new roommate search for her. But when you tell her politely and with lots of advance notice, you are not taking on a crumb of bad roommate karma. If she's going to be miserable about it, that's entirely of her own making.
