we waited a good 90 minutes, then they did chest X-rays and put me on a nebulizer. (a nebulizer's an inhaler they hook up an oxygen tank to, so you're getting the medication plus oxygen.) it felt so good to be able to breathe freely. the diagnosis is asthma flare-up, caused by minor cold symptoms and stress. they gave me Robitussin with codeine (for nights) and prednisone. we finally got out of there at 4:30 or so (poor Andy!). now i feel considerably better, i have drugs and i am gonna see about getting some sleep.
so, that's good.

Date: 2004-04-16 04:32 pm (UTC)the ER doctor also diagnosed me with bronchitis. if i were an average person, the bug would've caused a typical cold. next time i'll be prepared, i think.

Date: 2004-04-16 06:33 pm (UTC)i think they decided it wasn't bacterial because there were no fevers associated. what they gave me today has made things multitudes better, and i did try antibiotics when i first got sick...they didn't help at all. bronchitis can be viral, if i remember correctly. they seemed to really know what they were doing in the ER, so i believe 'em.
i knew i had some issues with asthma, but it was always classified as "exercise-induced asthma." no one ever thought to do maintenance for it. my old doctor just sent me away and told me to take OTC cough syrup for it. she's a loser...
i'm certain now that my asthma troubles are stress-related too, due to the times it's cropped up recently:
mid-February=job resignation strife
mid-March=horrible end of a friendship
mid-April=starting a new job
see a pattern? oy.
i do plan to be at the clothing swap tomorrow, barring an unexpected turn of doom for my health. see you there. :-D
