Dec. 19th, 2004 03:24 pmwent to UU service...it was nice, I tried not to cough to death. we had sushi afterwards at Bluefin. I have to say, the nigiri was amazing. I could've eaten nothing but red snapper nigiri and been ecstatic. the maki rolls were loosely made and mostly tasty, except for the plum/cucumber rolls, which had only a vague smear of plum paste. if you're into vegetarian sushi, don't bother with Bluefin.
after that, we wandered into the Kotobukiya Asian grocery.
!!!!!!
I've been buying dried seaweed of various varieties for years, and have NEVER seen it available at prices this low.
30 sheets of sushi nori cost...$4.99.
Japanese sushi rice...$1.79.
Plum paste...$1.30.
Dried hijiki seaweed...$2.10!!!
at Harvest you get a flimsy little pack of Nori sheets and they cost 10 bucks!
what I didn't find there were sushi mats, and I forgot to look for wasabi paste. some sesame seeds would be nice too.
once I get the proper equipment and learn the technique I will probably be making vegetarian sushi like a fiend.
