My LJ friend [livejournal.com profile] trisloth of the past eight years just funded his own studio cello album completely through fan contributions! I'm really proud of him, he's a great guy and super-talented.

I encourage you to click the link, check out the tunes, get yourself a very reasonably priced copy.

This DIY movement is something I really believe in. When I was a young musician with dreams of forming a band, I thought I would have to pimp myself out to some record company and hope they would like my product. Now I'm seeing lots of artists skipping that step entirely, and marketing myself. If I'm ever active in music again, it'll be extremely empowering to know that this is an option that others have taken and been successful with.

that's mostly the tack i've taken with the novel.

i admit i never had that kind of push for my music -- getting to play it with people was enough. if we had a reading-aloud sort of culture or a recicitative one, that might have settled me for my writing, too.

Thank you Hannah!!!

I really believe in this new model of making art. People might be interested in Amanda Palmer's take on it, the best I've read so far:
