Thanks to y'all and your helpful advice, I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad SL Series on its way to me from Newegg now. I'm proud to say that over 60% of it was paid for by proceeds from recent jewelry sales.

Under $500 even with shipping, whee

This iBook G4 is still useful, though. It's petite and convenient. LINUX BOX? Yes I do think so.

this obsolete Mac I'm on will become My Little White Linux Box. Waket said he'd help get it going with Ubuntu. and then I can learn how to use Linux and be cool like the rest of my technogeek friends. *sigh* one of my dreams will finally come true...
